An antique Mahal of imposing scale and singular character. The design employs an all-over repeating diamond and panel motif — a format associated with the village workshops of the Sultanabad district — rendered in the rich, abrash-tinted reds and ivories that are the hallmark of authentic early-twentieth-century production. The wool, hand-spun from fat-tailed sheep grazed on highland pastures, has developed the lustrous patina that only genuine age and natural dyes can produce. A rug of commanding presence.

Provenance
The Mahal district, centered on the city of Sultanabad (now Arak), produced prodigious quantities of carpets for Western export in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The finest pieces, like this one, were woven with exceptional care for traveling merchants who demanded both beauty and durability. The tribe wool and natural dye palette give this carpet a warmth no modern reproduction can replicate.
