The Bakhtiari tribe of the Zagros Mountains has produced some of the most boldly beautiful and visually arresting rugs in all of Persian weaving. This powerful example employs the tribe's characteristic geometric interpretation of the classical medallion format: a large, angular ivory medallion surrounded by geometric devices and stylised floral motifs floats above a rich red field, framed by one of the most dramatic floral borders in the Bakhtiari repertoire. The thick tribal wool has developed a beautiful hand-rubbed patina with age, giving the surface a warmth and depth that no new rug can possess.

Provenance
The Bakhtiari are one of Iran's great nomadic confederacies, moving twice yearly between winter pastures in the lowlands and summer grazing grounds high in the Zagros mountains. Their rugs were traditionally woven by women in tent workshops during the sedentary seasons, using wool from their own flocks dyed with plants gathered along the migration routes. This rug was woven in a settled Bakhtiari village workshop, preserving the tribal design vocabulary in a more refined, city-quality execution.
